What Activision Has Planned For 2008 and Beyond

Activision decided to skip this year's E3 festivities and instead are having their own fun. They've announced some new details on the rest of the games they'll be releasing in 2008 along with a tease of new information about games that will be coming in 2009.

First of all, Activision has announced that the new Metallica album "Death Magnetic" will be available as downloadable content for Guitar Hero III on the same day the album is released in stores. It will also be released for Guitar Hero: World Tour when that game comes out later in the fall.

The company also confirmed a number of games they're planning for 2009:

  • Wolfenstein is the next game in the Wolfenstein series and it will appear on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. More details are below.
  • A sequel to Marvel Ultimate Alliance is coming titled Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion. It will be developed by Vicarious Visions.
  • Singularity will be an original first person shooter, which will be developed by Raven.
  • The next Transformers movie will also get a game and Luxoflux will be developing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Disney's Bolt Flies to Game Systems Too

Bolt, the next computer animated movie from Disney (that's not being made by Pixar), will be released in theaters this November. It looks like a video game version will be released right alongside it as Disney Interactive today announced Bolt for the DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360.

Here's what Disney had to say about Bolt:

Bolt tells the story of a canine TV star that is inadvertently shipped from Hollywood to New York City, where he begins a cross-country adventure home and makes the surprising discovery that the super powers he thought he had don’t work in the real world. The Bolt video game, which is being developed by Avalanche Software, Disney’s Interactive Studios’ family games development studio, takes place in the world of the action-packed television show and offers the opportunity for Bolt and Penny to travel throughout five international locations, including Russia and Italy.

In the game, players take on the heroic personas of the TV star dog, Bolt, and his owner, Penny, from the high-action television series featured within the film. As Bolt, players can use his superpowers, including laser vision and his superbark, which sends out a sonic blast to devastate opponents, and as Penny, players utilize stealth, hacking skills and a wheelbar, inspired by her scooter seen in the movie, to outwit enemies.
Bolt is voiced by John Travolta, while Penny is voiced by Disney's big star Miley Cyrus. It's unknown if either will lend their voice to the game, but given Disney's track record, it's very likely.

Baja 1000 Game Coming this Fall

Activision has announced they will be publishing a game this Fall based on the grueling Baja 1000 road race. The game will be known as SCORE International Baja 1000 and it will be coming to the PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360. It is being developed by Left Field Productions, the development best known for the highly acclaimed N64 game Excitebike 64 and most recently known for the lackluster Wii pseudo-sequel Nitrobike.

Baja 1000 will be attempting to create a realistic version of the race as many vehicles may not make it to the end:

Sporting over 90 vehicles across multiple classes in the real Baja 1000 – including trophy trucks, class I, motorcycles, ATVs and more – the game challenges players to not only be first across the finish line, but also keep their machine intact! Hyper-realistic dirt and damage modeling in the game means players need to be crazy enough to take chances, but not so reckless that their vehicle is destroyed before the race is over.

    Guitar Hero 4 Officially Revealed

After months of financial statement teases and the initial reveal in an issue of Game Informer, Activision has officially released the first details of Guitar Hero 4, now known as Guitar Hero: World Tour. The game will be available this Fall on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360. The same development teams that created Guitar Hero III are back on board with the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions being developed by Neversoft, while Vicarious Visions is creating the Wii version and Budcat is bringing it to the PS2.

Guitar Hero: World Tour looks to be the beginning of a completely era for the Guitar Hero series. As was revealed by Game Informer, World Tour will feature a drumkit and microphone along with the Music Studio track editor and an eight-player Battle of the Bands mode. Any song created in the Music Studio can be shared with other gamers through the game's online database GHTunes.

Other gameplay options will include a four-player "full band" mode (that can be played both online and locally) and singleplayer Career mode that can be played with any instrument.

Activision is saying that World Tour will feature the largest number of tracks in a music game ever. As of now, four bands have been confirmed to have a place in World Tour: Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles and Sublime. And all of the songs will be master tracks; there will be no covers on Guitar Hero: World Tour. The game will also offer "significantly more localized downloadable music than ever before on all of the next-generation consoles." So while it's vaguely worded, it sounds like downable tracks are coming to the Wii as well as the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Finally, Activision has announced that the guitar controller will once again be redesigned, this time becoming "slick" and "more responsive."

    Catching Up on the News

My vacation is over and as I've been diggging through the video game news of last week I've realized that a lot happened last week. So here's a quick rundown of some of the stuff I'm just now reading about:

  • WiiWare (original downloadable games) for the Wii launched on Monday, May 12. Because of that, there were no games added to the Virtual Console and it doesn't look there will be any next week either. But WiiWare appears to be a hit as both LostWinds and Defend Your Castle are getting high marks.

  • Microsoft held their 2008 Spring Showcase and revealed a ton of new games and release dates. First, a Viva Pinata sequel titled Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise was announced. It will be released late this year. Microsoft also revealed release dates for the Xbox Live Arcade release of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness (May 21, which is next week!) and Too Human (August 19). Finally, the final title of the next Banjo-Kazooie game was revealed as Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

  • Harmonix revealed next week's downloadable songs for Rock Band and they will be all of the songs that will appear as bonus tracks on the European edition of the game. As usual, each song will be available for $1.99 (or 160 Microsoft Points) each. Here's the full listing:

    "Beetlebum" - Blur (cover)
"Hier Kommt Alex" - Die Toten Hosen
    "Countdown to Insanity" - H-BlockX
    "Perfekte Welle" - Juli
    "Manu Chao" - Les Wampas
    "Hysteria" - Muse
"Rock N Roll Star" - Oasis
    "New Wave" - Pleymo
    "Monsoon" - Tokio Hotel

  • Speaking of music games, Konami (the creators of the music game genre) have announced Rock Revolution for the DS, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will be very similar to Rock Band as they will includes vocals, guitars and drums. The Wii version will feature "air guitar" and "air drums" with the Wii Remote. All four versions will be released in the Fall.

  • Finally, Konami has also announced that they plan to celebrate Dance Dance Revolution's tenth birthday with three new games: Dance Dance Revolution X for the PS2, Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 2 for the Wii and Dance Dance Revolution Universe 3 for the Xbox 360.

I'm sure I missed a lot more than that. I'll keep digging and "Catching Up on the News #2" might even appear some time later.
